When I launched my first website I quickly learned how much I didnt know about the web and Internet marketing. More specifically, even though I had accomplished my first goal of creating a website, I had not true understanding of how search engines worked. As a result, my site took forever to get ranked and I quickly realized that I needed to learn more about search engine optimization.
So I did what most people do, I began my quest for information about search engine optimization, commonly referred to as SEO, and applied as much as I could. I spent thousands of additional dollars rebuilding my website and countless hours tweaking, updated, and changing things until I was well positioned for higher rankings.
Much to my dismay, nothing happened. I moved from page three on Google for specific search terms to page two. As a result I was discouraged and felt like giving up. But I couldnt give up. I had invested what little money I had into my website and knew that somehow I needed to achieve my goal of number one Google rankings.
I learned that SEO takes time. There really are no quick fixes. I also learned the proper techniques to not only find the right keywords to choose and build a site that is search engine friendly, I also discovered more than I could ever imagine about effective SEO techniques. Over time, I have expanded the techniques and continue to learn more powerful ways to boost search results. This continuous learning is necessary for search engine optimization because it is always changing.
The best advice I can provide based on all that I learned is that you should spend more time planning the design of your website, the market you are going to operate in, and the keywords you are going to build your website around. This, by far, is the most important aspect of SEO. Why? Because if you are entering an incredibly competitive space with an incredibly competitive keyword, it could take you a very long time to achieve top placements.
Another great tip when it comes to building a website, poised for number one rankings, is to keep it simple. Don't use flash and don't get exotic. Keep your website design basic and use functionality that is intuitive and easy to understand. This not only makes it easy for your browsers, but also ideal for search engine spiders.
Focus on link building. Submit articles, focus on acquiring one-way links, and develop a strategy for updating content on a regular basis so others will link to your site. Especially for Google, link building is an incredibly powerful tool.

Unfortunately, there aren't many "secrets" about SEO out there. What differentiates one technique from another is simply the strategy and process involved. As search engines update their algorithms, consider looking at new methods, tools, and resources to improve your organic rankings. This is essential for success.
